Parkour through of art today – Play

PLAY. Any activity that is performed for the enjoyment of the participants can be termed play. This principle differs from work and also from art, but we know that the presence of play is crucial in creative activities, from the everyday to artistic ones. Some artistic practices start as play and use this strategy to involve the onlooker in a more participatory, playful and critical endeavour.

Physical, visual or relational play, combines laughter with communication and is the basis for the emergence of language. In the context of language itself, we must remember that art is the synthesis of intellect and imagination (Immanuel Kant, Critique of Pure Reason, 1781), the result of the sensitive and formal instinct that arises from “the Play Drive” (Friedrich Schiller, On the Aesthetic Education of Man in a Series of Letters, 1795) and therefore we can say that play is the beginning of art and that art is play. Some contemporary artists, from irony, humour or parody, through nonsense and doubt as an anticipatory reflection of knowledge, explicitly engage in the tactics of play as a communication device with the public to engender receptiveness and more effective or critical participation.

The artist Rafel G. Bianchi unites the concept of play with that of critical observation. The dramatisation of small characters and scenarios in his paper cutouts, for example, refer to the metaphor of life and art from a small-scale perspective. These scenarios, like the theater of the absurd and the morality play engage the spectator’s interaction in cutting out new shapes to create new stories. The simulation of the language of the world of children is a form of approximation to reality, an ambiguous reality and certainly disappointing where we can educate our rational part via social and rational determinism. In the seemingly futile activities of play, can be recognised the origin of subjectivity and culture.

PARKOUR (FREERUNNING). A DICTIONARY OF ART TODAY

Like an urban parkour circuit among words, concepts, theories and keys to art, this dictionary does not follow the established routes but drifts through today’s art leaping between the semantic topography that defines and conceptualizes art productions. The journey is free-flowing, with no rules or hazards. It is based on one’s own trust as a reader.

Simplicity contrasted with complexity. This is what motivates the dictionary-circuit through the concepts of art today, along these obstacles of words and expressions that surround the world of art. Leaping and moving forward.

It is only something a bit different, a skilful stimulating journey through the linguistic and urban circuits of art in our days.

A number of obstacles to throw out and take on our journey:

Abject / SOCIAL ZOMBIE-IZATION / APPROPRIATION / IRONY / THEATRE OF THE ABSURD / VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY / kitsch / AXIOM / URBAN INTERVENTION / ARCHETYPE / BIO-POLITICS / CHARGE / BRAND / ARCHITECTURE FOR AN EVENT / RELATIONAL AESTHETICS / CRITIQUE OF REPRESENTATION / AUTHORSHIP / FICTIONAL DOCUMENTARY / DEATH OF THE AUTHOR / POST-PORN / DRILL / POST-MODERNITY / REAL / RHIZOME / CROWD / ICON / NET · ART ...
