Parkour through of art today – Abject

ABJECT. Many artists throughout history have immersed themselves in dark places linked to the extreme, the grotesque and the monstrous. The abject as an aesthetic category inspired by the psychoanalytic notion of abjection was formulated by Julia Kristeva in her work “Pouvoirs de l’Horreur: essai sur l’abjection” (1980).

In the role of “abject” the artist demonstrates the vulnerability of the human condition not only to recreate the deformed and the obscene, but to enter into a recognition of our primary impulses of death wish and self-destruction. In present day abject art the artist is not seeking simply an aesthetic result to re-engender provocation, but, rather, aspires to be interpreted as having a place in society and politics. A number of artists strive to represent the human body from ethnographic or sexual viewpoints which express the segregation of minorities with the aim of defending and vindicating their differences. It is the identity of class, race, and gender wherein lies the biased and discriminatory vision of society.

The photographs by the artist Andres Serrano on bodily fluids (Ejaculate in trajectory, 1989), religious imagery (Piss Christ, 1987) or the series of images taken in a morgue (The Morgue, 1992), caused a major scandal in the United States. These serve as examples of the transgressive practices of the aesthetic of the abject. The artist works with the big taboos of our culture: religion, death and sex. The abject, therefore, always exceeds limits and plays with prohibitions.

PARKOUR (FREERUNNING). A DICTIONARY OF ART TODAY

Like an urban parkour circuit among words, concepts, theories and keys to art, this dictionary does not follow the established routes but drifts through today’s art leaping between the semantic topography that defines and conceptualizes art productions. The journey is free-flowing, with no rules or hazards. It is based on one’s own trust as a reader.

Simplicity contrasted with complexity. This is what motivates the dictionary-circuit through the concepts of art today, along these obstacles of words and expressions that surround the world of art. Leaping and moving forward.

It is only something a bit different, a skilful stimulating journey through the linguistic and urban circuits of art in our days.

A number of obstacles to throw out and take on our journey:
