Parkour through of art today – APPROPRIATION

APPROPRIATION. Art and design, through the strategy of appropriation, extracts objects, images and texts from their cultural context and  moves them to another with little  modification. In this way they acquire a new meaning. Through repetition, copying or direct incorporation of an image, the author also questions the notions of originality and authenticity.

In 1977 the art theorist  Douglas Crimp organized the exhibition “Pictures” in the Artists Space of  New York. The artists shared a common methodology and discourse: using images from the media or from Art History to question, rather than the representation itself, the mechanisms by which it is encoded, and their effects. The exhibition recognised that the practice of appropriation _ a strategy connected to Duchamp_ had taken on a new momentum and the statement that there was a shift with regards the discursive content of the image. The technique allows a critical reading of the representation system and its power structures. The appropriation, with images and texts, can assume more humorous or social twists.

The Spanish artist Rogelio López-Cuenca works from images (posters, logos, signage) that are part of our environment and communicate messages already encoded. And by appropriation, and by some modifications, changes their meaning. His work generates reflections, based on a critique of the representation, on the concept of frontiers, alienation, emigration, tourism, culture or identity. Using the same  advertising strategies transforms images into political devices that communicate a social  awareness.

PARKOUR (FREERUNNING). A DICTIONARY OF ART TODAY

Like an urban parkour circuit among words, concepts, theories and keys to art, this dictionary does not follow the established routes but drifts through today’s art leaping between the semantic topography that defines and conceptualizes art productions. The journey is free-flowing, with no rules or hazards. It is based on one’s own trust as a reader.

Simplicity contrasted with complexity. This is what motivates the dictionary-circuit through the concepts of art today, along these obstacles of words and expressions that surround the world of art. Leaping and moving forward.

It is only something a bit different, a skilful stimulating journey through the linguistic and urban circuits of art in our days.

A number of obstacles to throw out and take on our journey:

Abject / SOCIAL ZOMBIE-IZATION / APPROPRIATION / IRONY / THEATRE OF THE ABSURD / VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY / kitsch / AXIOM / URBAN INTERVENTION / ARCHETYPE / BIO-POLITICS / CHARGE / BRAND / ARCHITECTURE FOR AN EVENT / RELATIONAL AESTHETICS / CRITIQUE OF REPRESENTATION / AUTHORSHIP / FICTIONAL DOCUMENTARY / DEATH OF THE AUTHOR / POST-PORN / DRILL / POST-MODERNITY / REAL / RHIZOME / CROWD / ICON / NET · ART ...
